Compliance Or Conformity

Romans 12:1-2  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  2  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Surrender to God is vital on so many levels. One of the outcomes of presenting ourselves to God is that we do not allow ourselves to be conformed to the culture of this world. This world works really hard to make us conform to its image. We have to remember that we are to be image bearers of the Lord. This means we are to bear the image of Godliness rather than unrighteousness. Cultural trends are becoming harder and harder to avoid. Presenting ourselves unto God means we are allowing ourselves to be transformed by the renewing of our mind rather than being forced into the image of this world.

This week’s study is about deciding when our allegiance to God overrides mandates enforced by our government. As evil continues to grow more and more, the trends of culture become harder and harder to avoid. We have often times been able to battle against immodesty by shopping at another store. We have been able to battle against influence of sinful thinking by changing the channel on the television or radio. We have been able to battle against the influence of relationships by simply removing ourselves from the presence of our influence. Now, I am seeing a different influence on the rise. It is a cultural influence that requires you to conform or go to jail. It is a cultural influence that is impacting the world at such a rapid pace we do not have much time to even consider it before being required to comply with it. We are moving into a season where conforming with culture and complying with mandates are becoming blurred lines.

Please understand, I am not saying we are there yet. I am saying it is trending in that direction. This is why Romans 12:1 is so prevalent. If we are totally and completely surrendered to God as a living sacrifice then we are going to have a harder time operating with a renewed mind. The reason the lines are blurring is because now we have an even greater division created among believers.
