Useless Conversations

2 Timothy 2:14-16  Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.  15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  16  But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

A few moments ago, I made a few finger rolls through Facebook. I can honestly say this piece of scripture is far from happening right now in the season we are living in. Verse 14 teaches us to avoid conversations that are going to upset people. Verse 15 teaches us to study in order to be approved unto God. Verse 16 teaches us to avoid empty or useless conversations because it will lead to more ungodliness.

Yesterday within our state the governor made a statewide mandate to wear mask everywhere we go. I am one of those that have only wore a mask when a store owner required it. Therefore, you probably know where I am on the entire mask wearing requirement. I did have an immediate impulse to go to social media and express my thoughts, opinions, and beliefs. I think it is an impulse all who have social media desire to do. I am not writing this to express whether wearing a mask is constitutional or unconstitutional. I am writing to express the need to stop conversations that undermines the faith of others.

God is teaching us to shut our mouths and open our Bibles. There is so much controversy about how to handle the circumstances of racism, Covid-19, and what life matters the most. I urge each of us not to open our mouths in arrogance nor open our mouths in ignorance. I will be the first to admit that it is hard to maneuver being obedient to God and trying to make sure I am operating under the Romans 13 principle. Rather than run to social media outlets in order to start arguments (which I have wrongly done). We must open our Bibles, study, and find out what God approves of. A person can rightly and correctly analyze scripture, determine the right course of action, and operate under obedience to God.

There is no need to go picking fights. There is no need to go poking bears in order to see if they are going to bite back. Before going to social media with your opinions, before voicing your viewpoint, and before trying to convince someone you are right we need to make sure we are right in the sight of God and we are operating under the authority of His Word. Please, Please, Please do not quote scripture out of context. We do not study in order to prove ourselves to be right and others wrong. We study to be right before God.

Examine these three verses in light of what we are experiencing today. Examine the motives of your conversations. Please make sure you have some form of idea of what you are talking about before even talking. Determine whether or not your viewpoint, opinion, or belief is going to lead to more ungodliness when made public. For the love of all things good and right, avoid useless conversations.
