How Deep the Father’s Love

Galatians 6:14  But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

This is one verse that jars me to the very core. I cannot help but think about how a person identifies themselves. The very nature of this verse causes us to assess the very source of our joy, peace, and hope. If we are going to glory/celebrate anything then we need to celebrate the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The cross is where God demonstrated His love for us. The cross is where God reconciled humanity back to Himself. If we can celebrate or boast of anything it is the cross. It is a reminder that it is not about us, but about Jesus.

Everything that I am centers around the cross. If I should boast of anything then it must be the cross of my Lord Jesus Christ. I want to share the lyrics to an old hymn that comes to mind when reading this verse:

How deep the Father’s love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
