Spiritual Warfare – Part 2

‘For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; ‘ 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

The understanding of spiritual warfare continues. This verse has been a huge blessing in my life. God’s word reminds us that our battle is not a battle of human form but a battle of the spiritual. God highlights the fact that we walk (operate) in the flesh, but spiritual warfare is not something experience in a human form. Even this verse does not address the aspect of spiritual warfare directly, I do believe that it is one of the most important verses when gaining an understanding where the battle takes place.

I personally believe that spiritual warfare takes place in the mind. I am not trying to more psychological than spiritual. I am trying to say that mind and the heart are directly connected. Proverbs 23:7 “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…” The mind has just as much to do with our spiritual state as any other part of our body. We must come to realize that the psychological world tries to minimize the spiritual battles that occurs within a persons mind. 2 Corinthians 10:5 addresses the fact that we must cast down imaginations, we must cast down anything that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and we must bring each and every thought under the obedience of Christ. I don’t know if you have ever taken an inventory of your thoughts, but if you have you would realize that this not very easy to do. It is a huge struggle, hence spiritual warfare. It is a battle. A battle that is not handled properly will cost us dearly in the end. Let me help you with this progression:

  1. It starts with us imagining something that really does not even exist. I like to call it creating buggers that do even exist. We are all very good at this. If we are not careful we can allow Satan to plant seeds of defeat, discouragement, and destruction within our minds. We have to the ability to buy into something we have allowed to be created in our minds to the point that we can self destruct. God commands us to demolish those imaginations that work against the knowledge of God. You and I must come to a place where we recognize and identify an evil thought. When we start to think a certain way, we start to live in the same manner. This is why we need the helmet of salvation. To protect our minds. Satan knows that if he can mess with our thinking then he can mess with our lifestyle.
  2. The key to discerning these thoughts is when they go against the knowledge of God. Knowing this must motivate us to knowing the truth. Without truth we can become confused between what is true and what is a lie. For example, you Satan can cause you to start thinking about being a failure, a fluke, or a loser. However; this goes against the truth of God. According to Romans we are considered a more than conquerer. You see, without knowledge of the truth of God’s Word it would cause you to believe Satan’s lie. Hold our thoughts up against the knowledge of God’s Word and it will help us maneuver through what is truth and what is a lie.
  3. We have to bring our thoughts under the obedience of Christ. Doing this means we hold the Word of God in the backdrop of every thought. I truly believe this is where the principle of praying without ceasing comes into effect. It takes being filled with the Spirit of God. The key to winning the battle within the mind requires obedience to Christ.

Just remember, if we want to change the way we live we must change the way think.
